To help you decide if liposuction is right for you, the board-certified dermatologists at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology have taken the time to answer some of the most frequently asked liposuction questions for you here. Contact our San Diego office if you have any more questions!

Q: What’s the ideal weight to be at for liposculpture and tummy tuck?

A: We classically like our patients to be a BMI less than 30 to be candidates for liposculpture, although individuals differ and an in-person consultation is needed to determine if liposculpture is a viable treatment option.

Q: Is Liposculpture with the help of laser lipolysis as good as normal Lipsculpture?

A: We offer laser lipolysis as well as traditional liposculpture.  In our practice, we have found that in areas that usually have some level of tissue laxity incorporating the laser to stimulate some new collagen production and tighten the skin, one can have meaningful results (like the neck, posterior arms, abdomen; where there is some tissue laxity).

Q: I’m 19 years old and am considering liposuction since I gained 20 pounds in one year. Is this a good idea, or a waste of money?

A: Liposculpture is not a waste of money if one has realistic expectations about what it can accomplish. It is not meant to be a weight loss procedure by any means and is meant to help sculpt areas that sometimes are stubborn to exercise and weight loss in someone who is within their ideal body weight.

Q: What should I do if I experience swelling all over my body following liposculpture?

A: We would encourage reaching out to the surgeon who treated you. Patients may experience peak swelling at 2 weeks post-lipo. The compression garment may be too tight and contributing to the swelling, and your surgeon will be able to offer you an alternative.

Q: How long does it take to see full liposculpture results?

A: Patients continue to notice improvement from 6-8 months after liposculpture, as the skin continues to retract.

Q: Can a person who is significantly overweight be a good candidate for liposculpture?

A: Ideally, a liposculpture candidate is within their ideal body weight (BMI less than 30 classically), with stubborn areas of fat they cannot get rid of. However, it is recommended to see a qualified doctor for an in-person consultation.

Q: Can CoolSculpting cause nausea and hypotension two weeks after a treatment? What happens to cholesterol levels in the first two weeks?

A: At our practice, we have not seen any such side effects in our patients, although this should be discussed with your treating provider. Cholesterol levels should not be affected, although again, you should discuss your symptoms with your provider.

Q: As you can now purchase the slim freezer belt for home use, does it not work on the same principle as cool sculpting only portable therefore okay to use at home?

A: CoolSculpting is a medical device that has been proven to safely and effectively reduce an area by a certain percentage. Take caution with any take home device, as it does not have the scientific backing and safety precautions that a medical grade device operated by skilled, trained professionals do.

Q: Should I wait to reach my goal weight for an Ultherapy treatment?

A: If you are planning on losing a significant amount of weight that would affect the amount of loose skin around the neck or jawline area, it may be better to wait until after the weight loss to undergo an Ultherapy treatment. If your goal weight is only within a few pounds, the weight loss typically will not make a difference regarding Ultherapy. Once you reach your goal weight, it would be best to visit with a board-certified dermatologist to determine if Ultherapy is still the most ideal treatment for you.

Q: How long do I need to wait after liposuction to have CoolSculpting done?

A: Generally, we recommend that patients wait at least 6 months after lipo to have CoolSculpting done. It usually takes 6 months or more to fully heal from liposuction.

Q: Will CoolSculpting work if I’m overweight, or should I try to lose weight and get closer to my goal weight before having the procedure done?

A: CoolSculpting works regardless of weight, but you will need more sessions to see a difference. Ultimately it’s up to you, and whether or not you feel that you can realistically achieve your goal weight without help.

Q: How long do Ultherapy results last? Is there a better skin tightener available?

A: Ultherapy usually lasts around 2 years. It is currently the best non-surgical skin tightening treatment available.

Q: Can CoolSculpting be broken up into smaller sessions instead of one 1-hour session?

A: This is not recommended. It takes one full hour for the fat cells to be destroyed, and smaller sessions will not achieve the same results.

Q: Does CoolSculpting have to be done by a physician, or can anyone with training on the machine do it?

A: At some practices, medical assistants, nurses, or physician’s assistants perform CoolSculpting after receiving training from the company to do so. At Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, our dermatologists perform CoolSculpting on patients themselves.

Q: Is it okay to have CoolSculpting if I have kidney or other types of disease?

A: We strongly recommend talking with your primary physician about whether or not this is okay.

Q: Can I exercise before a liposculpture treatment?

A: It is perfectly safe and even encouraged to exercise before having a liposculpture treatment. Liposculpture provides the best results on people who are at or near their target weight, so exercising and living a healthy lifestyle before coming in for a procedure can only help.

Q: Does CoolSculpting really work?

A: CoolSculpting absolutely works. Typically, people see between a 20 to 30% reduction after one treatment. There have been many studies published that support that this technology does in fact work when performed by a board-certified dermatologist or plastic surgeon.

Q: Is CoolSculpting effective on the lower abdomen?

A: CoolSculpting is effective on the lower abdomen, and can be used on the thighs and waist as well. Generally, patients see a reduction after just one treatment.

Q: What are the different types of fat reduction available?

A: Here at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology, our doctors offer the latest in fat removal treatments. Depending on your unique condition and problem areas, the doctor may recommend tumescent liposculpture, laser liposuction (laser lipolysis), or the non-invasive CoolSculpting treatment. Schedule a consultation with the liposuction experts today to see if you are a candidate for one of these cutting-edge fat reduction treatments.

Q: When will I see the results of my liposuction treatment?

A: Patients usually do see some improvement in the treated area within a few weeks of treatment, but it can take up to 6 months for full results to be seen.

Q: What is tumescent liposculpture?

A: Tumescent liposculpture is a form of liposuction that begins with the injection of a special solution into the treatment area. The solution fills the fatty area, numbing it, and eliminating the need for general anesthesia. It also contains adrenaline to constrict the blood vessels, which reduces the amount of bleeding experienced during the procedure. The doctor then suctions the fat out of the area through small cannulas inserted into tiny incisions. This liposuction treatment method allows the doctor to artistically sculpt the area and provide natural looking results with a short recovery time.

Q: What is CoolSculpting?

A: CoolSculpting by Zeltiq is a non-invasive fat removal system that uses selective cooling to freeze unwanted fat cells. The area of stubborn fat is placed into the CoolSculpting panels where it is cooled to a precise temperature to kill the fat cells without harming the surrounding tissues. Patients generally see a 20-30% reduction in fat with the CoolSculpting procedure. Contact our office to learn more about CoolSculpting by Zeltiq.

Q: Will liposuction tighten skin and reduce wrinkles?

A: Liposuction itself does not tighten skin, but we do offer the non-invasive Ulthera skin tightening procedure. Ultherapy utilizes cutting-edge ultrasound technology to stimulate the body’s production of collagen. The result is toned, tightened skin without a single incision and no downtime.

Q: What is laser liposculpture?

A: Laser liposuction is a treatment that combines tumescent liposuction with laser lipolysis treatment to remove fat and tighten skin at the same time. Laser liposuction is best for smaller treatment areas. It results in a quick recovery time and small scars.

Q: What is the difference between liposuction and liposculpture?

A: While liposuction and liposculpture are very similar, the major difference is the instrument used by the doctor. The cannula used during liposculpture is very thin and allows the doctor to artistically sculpt the treatment area. This procedure is less invasive than traditional liposuction and results in reduced downtime and smooth results.
