The liposuction and liposculpture experts at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego are leaders in the field, using the most advanced fat removal treatment techniques available today. Liposculpture is a term commonly used to describe the liposuction procedure.
What’s the Difference Between Liposculpture and Liposuction?
Liposculpture is a newer term used to describe liposuction. The term has become more popular for describing liposuction today as it alludes to the more artful approach many doctors are now taking to “sculpting” the treatment area. Here at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, we use both terms synonymously, as we always pay careful attention to how we sculpt and contour the treatment area.
Liposculpture is also commonly used to refer to the tumescent method in which the fat removal procedure is performed with local anesthesia only. The doctor fills the fat removal treatment area with a special solution containing lidocaine and adrenaline. The lidocaine effectively numbs the area to make the fat removal procedure as comfortable as possible, while the adrenaline causes the blood vessels to constrict, reducing the amount of bleeding. Once the area is numb, the doctor gently removes the excess fat through tiny incisions and a small cannula. He/she will carefully sculpt the area to achieve the desired contour.

With the tumescent or liposculpture method, the skin retains its elasticity due to the use of tiny cannulas so there is no sagging of the skin. However, in some cases we need more skin tightening, so then we perform laser tightening using a laser fiber inside of the cannula with the Cool Liposuction laser. The doctor will be able to determine which type of treatment is right for you during your consultation for fat removal!
You may also hear some doctors in San Diego use the term “liposculpture” when discussing treating smaller areas that require more precision, such as the chin or arms, whereas they use “liposuction” to refer to larger treatment areas from which a larger volume of fat is removed.
The doctors at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego have taken the time to answers questions they commonly hear about liposculpture and liposuction. If you have any more questions, contact our office in La Jolla.
Q: How long is the lipo recovery time?
A: Most patients take only two to three days to recover from liposculpture.
Q: How much does a liposuction procedure cost?
A: It is difficult to set one flat price for liposculpture and liposuction, as the liposuction treatment depends on the individual patient’s problem area(s) and desired outcome. When you visit one of our experts for a fat removal treatment consultation, he/she will carefully assess your problem areas and discuss with you and your goals. Once the doctor is able to create a customized treatment plan to meet your needs, the price of the treatment can be determined.
Q: What is laser liposculpture?
A: Laser liposculpture refers to liposuction alternative treatments in which the doctor also utilizes laser technology to smooth and tighten the skin. Here at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in San Diego, we utilize the CoolLipo™ system by CoolTouch® for laser lipo. We generally use CoolLipo for small treatment areas like the neck, jowls, and area under the chin. CoolLipo is a laser-assisted lipolysis treatment that liquefies the small fatty deposits and then tightens the skin once the fat is removed.
Q: Do you have before and after photos I can see before treatment?
A: Absolutely! Please browse through our liposculpture photo gallery to see the liposuction results our patients have experienced. Contact our office if you’d like to view more liposculpture before and after images.
Q: Is there a way to get results without surgery?
A: We do offer the non-invasive CoolSculpting procedure here at Cosmetic Laser Dermatology in La Jolla for patients looking to eliminate a small amount of excess fat without incisions or downtime. We also offer the non-surgical Exilis and Ulthera treatments for cellulite reduction and skin tightening, respectively. Contact our office in San Diego to schedule a consultation to see if you are a candidate for one of these non-invasive fat removal treatments.
Q: Am I a candidate for this fat reduction procedure in San Diego?
A: If you are a healthy adult who is looking to eliminate stubborn fat from areas that have not responded to diet and exercise, you may be a good candidate for liposuction alternatives. While we understand that patients want to lose weight fast, it is important to remember that liposuction procedures are not meant for significant weight loss. Liposculpture is a means of eliminating small amounts of fatty deposits. Contact our office in San Diego today to see if you are a candidate.
